Chugiak Lady Mustangs Take 3rd in State.

As the result of one of the worst umpire calls that anyone has seen in years the Lady Mustangs fastpitch softball team lost to Juneau in extra innings.

Veteran umpire Rod Hill said it was one of the greatest finishes he's ever witnessed.

Chugiak trailed 2-0 heading into the sixth. But the Mustangs strung together three straight hits with two outs to tie it. Chugiak scored again in the eighth to take a 3-2 lead. Juneau responded in the bottom of the inning when Cortney Wagner hit a fly ball to right-center field. Centerfielder Angela Hartford and right fielder Lindsey Yassik collided, but Yassik made an amazing grab and sent a relay throw to Mariah Bookbinder. But Bookbinder's throw home missed the target and the go-ahead run scored. "Those last few innings were intense," Chugiak catcher Joanna Schultz said. After the go-ahead run scored it was blatantly obvious to everyone that the Juneau runner did not tag up at second base as she thought that the fielder had dropped the ball. This was verified by channel 2 news and independent video. The umpires refused to change the call. The umpire who refused to change the call was from Juneau and should have never been on the field. He cost the Chugiak girls the game.

In the elimination Game against North Pole our Girls were simply out coached. Two unwarranted bunting attempts with runners on base, and several base running miscues was the difference in the game. A second atrocious call by the ASA Umpires deprived the Lady Mustangs of a run when the North Pole 3rd baseman laid on top of our runner preventing her to pursue home plate on a passed ball. The home plate umpire awarded our player home plate and later overturned his decision, which later turned out to be wrong in accordance with ASA Fastpitch rules. It is amazing how bad some of these umpires are! Sourgrapes, no, these umpires made game changing critical errors that cost the lady Mustangs their shot at the title … PERIOD!

Chugiak Girls Win State Soccer Title!

Chugiak girls claim state supremacy in a shootout over South

After dictating tempo and controlling the action Saturday, it seemed only fitting that the Chugiak High girls soccer team hoisted the trophy at the end.

It just took the Mustangs overtime - then double overtime and finally a penalty kick shootout - before they could celebrate their first state girls soccer championship in school history.

Chugiak rallied for a 2-1 victory over perennial power South at Anchorage Football Stadium, capping a historic season that ended the school’s 25-year title drought.
